I am in the process of trying to contact the UK
government on the subject, but so far no real
progress. The UK Patent Office to its credit
has been very helpful, but I agree, politicians
are hard to reach, and they just dont seem to
grasp the problem. I am going to draft an essay
on the whole subject of software patents this weekend
and mail it (snail mail) to EVERY mp I can.

One point I would like some input on is, assuming the
worst, what limits should be placed on software
patents ? I personally would like to see no patents
granted for software optimisations (like IBM have
been trying to get) that are dependent on a certain
configuration of hardware. e.g. new and novel algorithms are ok, but
general optimisations based on
compiler quirks (compiler or language dependent) should
be ruled out - as this sort of optimisation is the
main part of our everyday job.

Keep up the good work - many MP's are now online,
please e-mail as many as you can !

sincerely,

Nick Fleming.
