Corporations / Businesses mean jobs, and mass job cuts mean a dissatsfied
population, which will then (probably) vote for another political party when
the elections come. So on a political level, large businesses which make
up a substantial portion of the economy have a very large influence on
government policy. (It is no accident that Bill Gates was deemed the second
most powerful man in Britain.). Large companies for their own protection
need to patent their creations (on the simplest level) purely to protect
jobs.
So when you hear people talking about "protecting ideas" they are really
talking about protecting peoples means of income.
    Normally, this works as in the past the only institutions which can
afford
the research to create something worthy of a patent are the large
companies. There are exceptions, but R & D is generally expensive.
    Guess what ? It doesn't work for software as the R&D costs are much
lower.The tools required for developing new creations are cheap, and
thanks to the internet, often free. The ability to copy with 100 percent
accuracy, works of literature, science, music and art at the touch of a
button makes a mockery of copyright laws. etc etc..
