Hi there!
I just would like to say that I don't agree with your
assertion.
Actually inventions are so virtual as say 100 years ago or even later.
Today inventors have the chance to fix their inventions in a more
virtual way.
That is different!
Leonardo,Descartes,Pascal or Newton did not patent their ideas, they
wrote or drew them instead.
I don't know if they could patent machines or products based on their
ideas as Edison,Bell or Novel did years later.
If they would have had computers and would have written some code and
would have been allowed to patent those soft programs, Science/Tech
development would have been even harder.
Patenting soft is different from copyrighting soft because you get
ownership of the whole idea so patenting soft is patenting ideas and
this in my humble opinion will destroy what allow us differentiate
Science from Technology.
Please,try to imagine the results of a patented program from C.J.Doppler
to calculate the change of frequency on sound waves or electromagnetic
radiations when there is a relative motion between the observer and the
source.
Nightmare!
It is insane to patent that now or in the not so virtual early austrian
XIX century!

By the way, if your brain produce some ideas after reading this e-mail
try to probe non-obviousness before patenting them.      X^D
