Do you have any advice to give based on that experience?

Your merits as a programmer and inventor are overwhelming. But the credib=
ility
of your call to others to "Invent [...] an equally good alternative way o=
f
doing the same job", depends upon how you dealt with patents yourself. Wo=
rking
around them that is, not filing them.
