First, Gregory once again I will not tollerate people calling each other
Nazis on this list! By alluding that horrors were built not on logical
frameworks but on emotions, that is acctually probably false in most
cases. People did research into racial differences for a living and it
was considered a valid field of study.

> In al cases, software achieves a technical effect if you properly define
> your terms and rules of reasoning about intellectual property.

Some of my software composes music given some data as input, is that a
technical effect?

> Allof the complaints against software patents are true for many other
> areas of technology being patented.  To be against software patents, is
> to be against all forms of patenting, which seems to be the true cause
> here.

Once again, no it isn't the cause. If you bring it up again I will smack
you with a dead fish:-). The reasons to not want software patents are
based on the fact that (atleast for me) the trouble that society has to go
through with having software patents is not warrented by the gains that
society gets when you write software (that is run on a general
purpose computer).

For medecin this is not the case, we gain alot from allowing patents on
medecin. Ofcourse there are other more or less vaild reasons for not
wanting patents on medecin.

>  But for the rest of sticking to science and logic, software is
> unconditionally patentable (though it would help if the patent office
> improved the quality of issued software patents).

This is not at all clear to me or most people on this list, so why don't
you try and make a proper attempt at explaining why software is
patentable.

And just because software can be reduced to hardware doesn't mean that it
should be patentable. So what is a different reason for saying that there
should be patents on software (prefereably with economic gain for society
as a whole).
