Patent attorneys are usually graduates of an engineering discipline
with a few years of practical training in patent law procedures.
They are competent in obtaining patents but not necessarily in assessing
the merit of caselaw decisions with regards to legal systematics or
economics (which can come into play in teleologic interpretation).
So at least when talking to patent attorneys, the "IANAL" modesty
is unwarranted and will probably not be rewarded.
