Someone proposed

        lossy compression patent
        jpeg-style lossy compression patent

Calling it "jpeg patent" is a misnomer, because

  - the jpeg standard was developped independently of this and contains
many algorithms which could be infringing on some yet unchecked
    patents

  - the lossy compression patent to date covers not only jpeg but also
wav and a series of other protocols/formats.

Calling it the "short lived patent" is not justified yet, and it would
hardly be distinctive, since there are very many short lived patents.
Also, given that the priority dates to 1986 and that Sony already paid 15
mn usd, this one doesn't seem to be one of the easiest to break.
