What would be a "statistical proof" ?
While the claim that "patents are destroying R&D" sounds exaggerated (did
the article really claim that?), it is clear to anybody who has eyes to
see and ears to hear that they are degrading the environment of software
development and doing more bad than good. Placing an unrealistic burden
of proof on the other side is not a valid argument. The burden of proof
is on those who want to restrict freedom. So if you think that
"statistical proofs" are needed before something can be said about the
effects of patents on software development, then you'd better generate
these proofs quickly. Otherwise there is no rationale for allowing
software patents (or, if you claim they can't be singled out, the patent
system as a whole) to continue to exist.

Could you give me an example of an standardised interface for
communication between two pharmaceuticals? We are not talking about
"quality standards" or standardised test procedures but about interface
standards.
Interface standards do not play nearly as big a role anywhere as in
software. Of course I also count telecommunications standards as software.
If there is a pharmaceutical interface standard anywhere, it is probably
software. Even a standard for screws or plugs is likely to be based on
pure calculation rules.
