Try running a real business - having to hire people and be able to pay
for them with income from sales.  If you actually have something worth
a lot of money, I suspect you will be running to the patent system,.

=> Of course... but first there are the fees and only later the potential
benefits. And with all the expenses they already have to run their
business.... So if you have the money to pay for protection, ok. But that
is as commonly known  what smes do not have. :-)
