> > what the h*** have patents to do with film and music industry???

> There is a new "IP enforcement directive" which lumps both patents and
> copyright together and in which Fourtou is the rapporteur, just as
> McCarthy is the rapporteur for the swpat directive.  In the swpat
> directive context, Fourtou has pushed for the most stringent possible
> enforcement rules, just as in her own IP enforcement directive.  And
> in both cases we have clueless online journalists confusing the rapporteur
> with the parliament.

Additional points of connection:

 - Patents on novel film and music concepts are not out of reach today.
Not only streaming techniques but also quite a lot of the methods used
in Pixar films could be patented.
GregNews had an article about the "increasing impotence of copyright
and need for patents in the fine arts" or similar recently.
 - Microsoft is interested in expanding into the "contents industry" and
they are in a phase of negotiations with Vivendi.
