Practical differences which in the world of hardware/software codesign,
endless numbers of CAD/CAM/CAE etc. systems, differences that are going
away. Computing is just another branch of physics and mathematics for
which software and hardware is its engineereing arms.
Perhaps some day that will be true, but today these programs do not
make physical design trivial. Just look at how hard it was to verify
whether the failure of a piece of foam destroyed the shuttle.
