One reason behind patents on software is the "weakening" of entrepreneurship
in Western countries. In large companies, IT managers have been replaced by
financial managers. These financial gurus are building companies "without
plants", probably "without men", which means:

1) Patenting software "inventions" to secure Western market.
2) Hire a workforce in India. Downsize Western Europe workforce.

Patents are precisely for that: move IT research centers to India.

Best regards,
Jean-Michel Pouré
