The publication advertised here might be one of the best introductions to
the daily work and mindset of the universitarian patent movement.
Since this is being sent around as unsollicited e-mail, I assume it is ok for
me to publish it here.

Technology Transfer Organization Manual
by Jon Sandelin, Senior Associate Emeritus, Stanford University Office of
Technology Licensing
The importance and impact of the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is
dramatic. According to a 2003 survey from the Association of University
Technology Managers, sales of university-licensed products exceed $50
billion, creating several hundred thousand new jobs and more than $7
billion in incremental tax revenues.
Learn the ten critical steps in university technology transfer from a
leader in the technology transfer field, Jon Sandelin. This recently
published manual provides insight for existing and newly forming TTOs into
polices, practices and procedures refined at Stanford University over 30
years. The manual includes a general framework for the operation of a
university technology transfer organization, the process of university
technology transfer through patenting and licensing, the administration of
a TTO and includes sample documents covering the policies, practices,
procedures, and agreements important in operating an effective technology
transfer office.
The business/marketing model outlined in this manual is by far the
dominant TTO model in the U.S. It views the process as a
business/marketing activity and hires people with business experience and
an entrepreneurial attitude.
The manual includes:
The Critical Roles
Inventor
Licensing Associate
Invention Advocate
The TTO Mission
Laws, Policies and Procedures
Understanding and Managing the Process
Marketing the TTO
Evaluation and Selection
Intellectual Property Strategy
Marketing Strategy for Inventions
